The Ordos Desert sits on a high plateau looped by one of the world’s most iconic rivers — the Yellow River curves around it on three sides, forming a natural boundary that has shaped both the landscape and human history here for millennia. Over roughly three decades, a combination of government programs and private enterprise has converted more than 6,000 km² of moving sand dunes into stabilized, vegetated land. The approach relied on planting sand-binding species in a grid pattern — a technique sometimes called straw checkerboard stabilization — alongside drip irrigation networks in targeted zones.

The Gobi Desert is the Ordos’s most significant neighbor — and in some older classifications, the Ordos was treated as a sub-section of the greater Gobi system. Modern geography treats them separately, primarily because the Ordos sits on a distinct geological block and receives slightly more precipitation than the central Gobi. Ordos vs. Taklamakan: A Comparison

Both the Ordos and the Taklamakan are Chinese deserts, but they are fundamentally different in character. The Taklamakan is a deep continental desert — enclosed by three mountain ranges, starved of moisture, and dominated by shifting sand seas (erg terrain). The Ordos, by contrast, is a plateau desert with a more varied surface, significantly higher precipitation in its eastern margins, and a much longer history of human habitation.

The Taklamakan is also far more isolated — the ancient Silk Road skirted its edges precisely because its interior was impassable.
