Desertio is an independent digital publication dedicated to exploring and explaining the deserts of our world. We provide clear, accessible, and carefully reviewed information about the landscapes, wildlife, climate systems, geological features, and cultural histories of Earth’s driest regions.

From vast sand seas and salt flats to rocky plateaus and polar deserts, these environments are more varied than they may first appear. Desertio publishes desert profiles, maps, guides, comparisons, and factual summaries designed to help readers understand their geography, ecology, climate, and human significance.

Desertio is published under the Desertio name and managed by its editorial team. Responsibility for editorial standards, source selection, factual review, corrections, and content updates rests with Desertio.

Editorial Process

Articles are prepared from publicly available reports, datasets, scientific publications, official records, protected-area information, and other relevant reference materials. The amount of review required depends on the subject, the availability of reliable sources, and the nature of the claims being presented.

Before publication or during a later content review, factual claims may be checked for geographic accuracy, measurement type, data year, source reliability, naming consistency, unit conversion, and agreement with the cited material. Particular attention is given to claims involving temperature records, rainfall, population, biodiversity, geological age, conservation status, protected areas, and international recognition.

Content may also be reviewed when new evidence becomes available, when an authoritative organization updates its data, or when a reader identifies a possible error or inconsistency.

Editorial and Source Standards

Scientific and statistical claims should be supported by clear and traceable sources. When an article includes figures relating to temperature, rainfall, population, biodiversity, geological age, protected status, UNESCO recognition, or conservation conditions, the relevant source should be listed at the end of the article whenever possible.

Source entries should identify the title of the report, dataset, publication, or official page; the responsible institution or publisher; the publication or data year; a direct link to the original source; and the date on which the information was last checked.

Priority is given to authoritative and primary sources, including NASA, the World Meteorological Organization, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, UNESCO, the United Nations Environment Programme, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, national environmental and geological agencies, official protected-area authorities, universities, and peer-reviewed research.

Secondary sources may be used to provide background, context, or an accessible overview. They should not replace an available primary source when an important scientific, geographic, statistical, or conservation claim can be verified through the original publication.

When reliable sources use different definitions or measurement methods, the article should explain the distinction rather than combine unlike values. Examples include land-surface temperature and air temperature, deserts and drylands, administrative populations and metropolitan populations, or protected areas and broader desert regions.

Some older Desertio articles may not yet contain complete source lists. These pages are being reviewed and updated gradually. The absence of a reference section should not be interpreted as independent verification of every figure presented on the page.

Corrections and Updates

Desert data can change as new satellite measurements, climate records, conservation assessments, population estimates, protected-area decisions, and scientific studies become available. Articles may therefore be revised when a newer or more authoritative source is published.

When a significant factual error is identified, the relevant passage should be corrected and its supporting sources reviewed. Depending on the nature of the change, an article may also receive an updated review date, source list, clarification, or correction note.

Minor spelling, formatting, grammar, link, and presentation changes may be made without a separate correction notice. Changes that materially affect the meaning of a scientific, historical, statistical, or geographic claim may be disclosed within the article when appropriate.

Readers who notice an outdated statistic, broken source link, incorrect location, naming inconsistency, unsupported statement, or conflicting measurement are encouraged to contact the editorial team. Correction requests should identify the relevant page, the disputed information, and any supporting source that may help us review the issue.

Editorial Independence

Editorial decisions are based on relevance, source quality, factual accuracy, clarity, and usefulness to readers. Advertisers, advertising platforms, commercial partners, and other third parties do not receive control over Desertio’s editorial conclusions, factual assessments, rankings, or corrections.

Advertising does not constitute an endorsement of a product, service, organization, destination, or claim. The appearance of an advertisement beside an article does not mean that the advertiser reviewed, approved, sponsored, or influenced that article.

Funding and Advertising Disclosure

Desertio is funded in part through advertising revenue. This revenue helps cover website hosting, technical maintenance, content production, research, editing, security, and the continuing review of existing articles.

Advertisements may be selected, delivered, and measured by third-party advertising services. Desertio does not control every advertisement that may appear to an individual visitor, and advertisements may vary according to location, device, page content, browser settings, consent choices, or the systems used by the advertising provider.

Advertising arrangements are kept separate from the editorial process. Payment for advertising placement does not provide an advertiser with the right to alter an article, remove criticism, approve wording, influence source selection, or prevent a factual correction.

Sponsored or paid content, if published, should be clearly identified so that readers can distinguish it from independently prepared editorial content. Desertio does not accept payment in exchange for presenting an unsupported claim as fact or for concealing a material commercial relationship.

Deserts influence regional and global climate systems, contain distinctive geological formations, support highly adapted plants and animals, and preserve important cultural and archaeological records. Many desert regions are also affected by water scarcity, land degradation, habitat loss, expanding development, and climate change.

By presenting these environments accurately, distinguishing between different scientific measurements, and placing factual claims in context, Desertio aims to support informed learning rather than repeat unsupported statistics or treat all dry regions as if they were the same.
